What They Didn't Tell You About Pregnancy- Hair

When you see a pregnant woman walking down the street, you'll most likely spot her with her hand over her round belly, protecting and comforting the life that is growing inside of her. If she's very far along, she may even be supporting her back with her other hand as she also waddles along the sidewalk. Her hair is long and gorgeous and she's glowing.

Strangers smile at her and may even reach into her comfort zone, unasked, and touch her belly. People generally seem to be nicer to her because she is pregnant. She may be snippy, or she may not be. A woman in that delicate situation can be unpredictable. I mean, why not? Her feet have grown, she's developed astigmatism, and she's hot.

That luscious hair that has grown so long and shiny is making her sweat. Not only that, she was unprepared for the hair that grew elsewhere. The hair on her toes has grown, her leg hair is long and unreachable for a shave, and weirdly enough, she's grown hair on her stomach. You read that right, she's practically Sasquatch.

I got the best and worst of all worlds. The hair on my head got thicker (that would have been awesome, but I already have thick hair), it grew longer, it was shinier, and my hair started to curl. It made for easy days when it came to styling my hair.

Unfortunately, my stomach began to sprout dark, embarrassing hair, (Sorry, TMI) and have you ever tried to shave when you're far along? The closer to my due date, the more I tried to shave and paint my toes. When I was pregnant with my daughter, my doctor made a joke that she must not be ready to leave yet because I could still paint them... Um... Doc, you have no idea the effort and torture that I went through to get that done for you and everyone else who might be in the delivery room with me.

Fortunately, for all of us, the hair disappears within a few months after giving birth. When we are ready to go back out into the world and want to make ourselves presentable, again, we won't have to worry about that belly getting in the way and we can stop shamefully shaving those weird places that were just embarrassing in the first place--- Not that anyone else really knew that because we are civilized, after all, and we aren't running around in the nude all day.

What weird things happened to you during pregnancy? Did you grow hair in weird places, too?

  1. Been there! The part I hate is the emmense shedding that occurs after your hormones normalize. My hubby calls it wookie Hair. Ha!

  2. I'm not a mom and I don't know about pregnancy, but I'm interested in knowing things that nobody talks about!

    1. I knew that hair might appear healthier and thicker, but I didn't know it would affect all hair. It was a little ridiculous.

  3. I've never been pregnant before but I find this so strange. No one talks about this part of pregnancy, who knew!?

  4. Yup, I remember the shedding. I have long hair, and I freaked out at first when clumps would come out.

  5. That and what it does to your teeth. My hair is now healthy and I had 5 kids.

    1. Maybe that's why I had so many new cavities starting after I had my daughter. I had always had healthy teeth and then one day I have to get fillings.

  6. I already have super thick hair, and it got thicker when I was pregnant and I did not love it! Then I had that post partum hair loss and oh man that sucked too!

  8. I did not have any unusual hairy experiences like you mentioned at all. My hair is thick anyway so I am not sure if it got thicker but what happened was my 2nd baby began sucking calcium from my teeth which was a weird experience for me.

    1. I rarely go and get my hair done professionally anymore, because I feel bad leaving the kids to my husband after he gets off of work and honestly, I just want to use those hours to relax and watch tv or a read a book. When I do go and get my hair done, I apologize to my hair dresser because she has to correct the uneven layers that I created when I decided to cut my own hair. haha.

  11. I had no idea pregnancy hair was a thing. I don’t recall my hair or body hair doing weird things but then it’s been 20 years since I was pregnant…

  12. I did not grow hair anywhere. But a couple months after giving birth I started to lose my hair. Everyone said it was hormones and that it would stop after a bit...it's been 14 years and I STILL lose my hair like crazy!

    1. I now have molting seasons just like my dogs. Twice a year, my hair will fall out in clumps. It's frustrating!

  13. I found this very interesting because for some reason when I was pregnant with my twins it was amazing, I NEVER had to shave my legs. It was just crazy. Of course, with my singleton I was not as lucky. As far as the hair on my head, it was was just so thick during pregnancy and it was unbelievable the amount of hair that fell out postpartum. I couldn't believe I had any left.

    1. I have pretty light arm and leg hair, so it was shocking one day to look and suddenly feel like a lumberjack.

  15. This is something new to many people's ears. I can imagine how shocking it can be for first timers. Good thing it all fades away because if not, there could be trouble.

  16. I didn't grow hair in weird places but I know of some that did. Other than swelling especially in my ankles I can't think of anything that really stands out as weird. My legs and feet looked like elephant legs.

    1. My feet actually grew a size with my youngest. It was already finding cute shoes in a size 10, but a size 11, makes shopping for shoes not even fun.

Luckily, I didn't swell, much, but I know of other women who had to wear flip flops year round.

  18. I've studied martail arts for over 20 years. My weirdest moment in pregnancy was while doing chi (ki gong) exercises my baby "stole" my chi energy and had someone not seen it coming I would have crashed to the ground. Apparently they can feel energy better than we can and manipulate it more than you can. It was incredible and helpless at the same time.

    1. I always had my hair thrown up when I was pregnant with my daughter because I was so hot all of the time. I wore it down one day and everyone kept complimenting my hair because it had gotten very long, very thick, and had natural curl. My secret- pregnancy. haha.
